Domaine Prieuré-Roch

Founded in 1988 by Henry Frédéric Roch, Domaine Prieuré Roch occupies a singular position in Burgundy. Rooted in an exceptional family lineage Henry Frédéric Roch was the grandson of Henry Leroy, founder of Maison Leroy, and became co-managing director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1992 alongside Aubert de Villaine the estate was conceived from the outset as an uncompromising expression of terroir, guided by humility, rigor, and vision.
Today, the domaine spans approximately twenty hectares, spread across some of Burgundy’s most historic and revered appellations: Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Ladoix, and Savigny-lès-Beaune. This remarkable patchwork of vineyards reflects the geological and cultural diversity of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, each parcel contributing its own voice to the domaine’s identity.
A rare distinction in Burgundy, Domaine Prieuré Roch is the sole owner of three monopole clos, entirely farmed and vinified by the estate:
Clos des Corvées (5.21 ha, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru), one of the largest contiguous vineyard holdings in the appellation;
Clos des Varoilles (6 ha, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru), renowned for its structure and depth;
and the legendary Clos Goillotte (0.55 ha, Vosne-Romanée), an extraordinary historic vineyard once owned by the Prince de Conti and located at the very heart of the village.
Beyond these monopoles, the domaine cultivates several iconic parcels, including Clos de Bèze, among the oldest enclosed vineyards in France, the storied Clos de Vougeot, and celebrated Vosne-Romanée climats such as Les Suchots and Les Hautes-Maizières. Many of the vines are of advanced age—often exceeding 80 years—contributing to the wines’ remarkable concentration, depth, and complexity.
From its inception, Domaine Prieuré Roch has adhered to a radically natural philosophy. No synthetic products are used in the vineyard or in the cellar, with organic and biodynamic practices placing soil life and natural balance at the center of the domaine’s approach. The role of the vigneron is not to impose, but to guide—to listen to the vineyard and allow the terroir to express itself freely through the seasons.
Vinification follows the same uncompromising principles: hand harvesting, rigorous sorting, whole-cluster fermentation, and traditional foot treading in wooden vats. Sulfites were progressively eliminated beginning in the early 1990s and have been entirely absent from both vinification and élevage since 1995, resulting in wines of exceptional purity, vitality, and digestibility.
Élevage takes place over approximately 18 months in oak barrels, often 100% new for the domaine’s most prestigious cuvées. The wines are neither fined nor filtered, preserving their natural integrity and aromatic complexity. This approach yields wines of striking intensity and sensuality, defined by energy, precision, and an unmistakable sense of place.
Following the premature passing of Henry Frédéric Roch in 2018, the domaine continues under the direction of Yannick Champ, trained by Roch since 2002 and co-managing director since 2010. With the same dedication, humility, and exacting standards, he perpetuates the spirit and philosophy that have made Domaine Prieuré Roch one of Burgundy’s most revered and sought-after estates.
